The work safety Program at the Port of Ploče started in 1996 by establishing the Occupational Safety and Health Service. The first step in the work was the vocational education of employees within the Service itself, and at the end of the training they started training employees according to their own experience. Today, the Service, with continuous training through seminars and professional conferences, successfully performs all occupational issues related to safety.

The Port of Ploče was the first company to make assessments of hazards in the workplace in Croatia, and the employees of this department were amongst the first to pass the occupational safety exams in the area of Dubrovnik-Neretva region.

The Occupational Safety and Health Services Department, in cooperation with Human Resources, also created the first Professional Education Program for Workers in Croatia that was tailored for 11 operations in the port´s activities. The program was drafted according to the ITF Trade Union. The entire Work Safety Record in the Republic of Croatia was drafted according to the proposal of the Port of Ploče. Based on its references, the Service was therefore first granted authority to educate its employees, and the program began to be implemented in 2005.

The introduction of the ISO 9001/2006 certification improved the efficiency of the operation of the Service, and was introduced in 2006.
