The traffic in the Port of Ploče increased in 1979 by 400% compared to 1966. In parallel with the growth of the port, the city of Ploče was being developed with activities related to the port and also to industry. The Port of Ploče had become the cornerstone of the overall development of the Neretva region, thus there was a need for a greater number of workers. This was the reason for the rare phenomenon that the town of Ploče had more employed people in its territory than residents.
