PORT OF PLOČE COMMUNITY

The reputation and success of the port is in fact the reputation and success of its employees who are known for their expertise in port operations, which is the strongest link in the port´s business. The special relationship between the Port of Ploče and the local community is also emphasized in the tradition in which several generations of families work in the port.

The Port of Ploče Authority is aware that it is necessary to assist in the development of the local community and the town of Ploče so that the port, as an integral part of that community, continues to develop and grow. For this reason, the port regularly participates in projects and events that have a positive impact on community development, and new projects are in the process.

VI. The meeting of port and dock workers of the former Yugoslavia was were held from 13 to 16 October 1977 in Ploče on the grounds of the Sports Center Močvara. In the evening at the opening, mini-football teams from Ploče and Split met. Of the 19th existing ports and docks, 18 participated along with the hosts (being the Port of Ploče): Metković, Osijek, Pula, Rijeka, Split, Šibenik, Vukovar, Zadar, Bar, Belgrade, Brčko, Koper, Novi Sad, Pančevo, Prahovo, Smederevo and Sremska Mitrovica. Unfortunately, the workers of the port of Dubrovnik did not participate in these sports meetings.

In front of a large crowd, the games began with the ceremonial mimicry of all the participants and the lifting of the flag of the port games by the captain of the most successful mini-team in the past meetings, Tomislav Beidenegl. On the playgrounds of the Močvara there were competitions in football, bowls, chess, pulling of the ropes, table tennis and work disciplines such as handling of tractors, forklifts and cranes.

The hosts, The Port of Ploče, were the most successful and they won a total of 137 points, the Port of Rijeka placed second, while the third place was won by the Port of Split. All three days of competition took place in front of full stadiums of the newly built Močvara Sports Center. The audience’s enthusiasm was particularly inspired by the defense of the Port of Ploče football team, which was played by Tomislav Dabić, Andrija Šunjić, Rade Vizintini, Tomi Beidenegl, Dragan Kiš, Branko Pavković, Smiljan Šunjić, Ante Štrbić and Ivica Andrijašević under the coaching of Ivica Pavlović. THE MARATHON OF LAĐE

The marathon of lađe is one of the central traditional Neretva events that has been held since 1999. The goal of the marathon is to revive the old Neretva tradition and ethnographic heritage. The whole event is based on the legends of Chief Domagoj’s pirates, who used to row their lađe in the same manner. The marathon organizers are trying to find a way to revive this ancient skill of the Neretva region. The marathon covers a distance of 22 kilometers, starting in Metković, and the final goal is in Ploče. Numerous teams participate not only from the Delta Neretva, but also from other parts of Croatia, Europe and beyond. One team consists of 12 rowers, 5 on the left and 5 on the right, the drummer and the helmsman.
